It moves easily to Mitchell Lake, which occupies a broad, marshy flat at the base of Mt Audubon (.85 miles : 10,725').The trail crosses Mitchell Lake's inlet on a long footbridge (1.1 miles) and steepens into the valley's center. Blue Lake's outlet pools up in several places along the way, forming a string of large ponds that are worth exploring. Look for moose in this willow-lined corridor.The trail undulates through patchy krummholz with a good look at Mt Toll's conical summit.

It clears treeline by a wide cascade and crests on the east shore of Blue Lake (2.55 miles : 11,355').The open shore offers room to explore and a complete view of the upper valley including Little Pawnee Peak (12,466'), Mt Toll (12,979'), Paiute Peak (13,088'), and Mt Audubon (13,223'.Here the maintained trail ends, but a fairly intuitive route continues up the north shore to Upper Blue Lake (11,833'), which lies in a rocky bench below the Mt Toll - Paiute Peak saddle (3.35 miles : 11,901').

Brainard Lake Road is located 13 miles north of Nederland, and just northwest of WOverview Pawnee Campground is located in the Brainard Lake Recreation Area, off the Peak to Peak Scenic Byway, 35 miles south of Estes Park and the main entrance to the Rocky Mountain National Park. Visitors enjoy the area for its fishing, canoeing and hiking opportunities. Natural Features:The campground lies at the foot of the Continental Divide, next to 25-acre Brainard Lake and the Indian Peaks Wilderness Area at an elevation of 10,350 feet.

A scenic forest of spruce and fir trees covers the area. Summertime temperatures are warm in the day and cool at night. Afternoon thunderstorms are common.

Recreation:Brainard Lake is a popular destination for canoeing, kayaking and fishing. Anglers cast for rainbow, brown and cutthroat trout. Long Lake, Red Rock Lake and Left Hand Reservoir are nearby.Several trails in the area provide access to the adjacent Indian Peaks Wilderness Area.

Hiking is allowed on all trails; mountain biking is allowed outside the wilderness area. Rock climbing, snowshoeing and cross country skiing are often available, weather permitting.

Facilities:The campground offers several single-family campsites, each equipped with a picnic table and campfire ring. Vault toilets and drinking water are provided. Nearby Attractions:The town of Nederland is 14 miles south of the campground, offering grocery and hardware stores, restaurants, gas, a bank and a post office.Rocky Mountain National Park's main entrance is 35 miles north in Estes Park.

With a wide variety of year-round outdoor recreation opportunities available, Brainard Lake Recreation Area (BLRA) is the most popular destination on the Boulder Ranger District.ï¿½ Developed camping is only allowedï¿½at Pawnee Campground.ï¿½ Hiking trails to the west of the BLRA enter into the Indian Peaks Wildernessï¿½and trails can be snow packed until early or mid July.

Paved roadway, clean bathrooms, potable water spigots, graveled level campsites (40+). You'll find 47 campsites with 11 of them being tent-only, walk-in sites. All campsites had beautiful new picnic tables; fire pits; raised barbecue grills; huge bear boxes to securely store your food and coolers; and level areas for RVs and tents.More Brainard Lake has good population of Brook Trout if you enjoy fishing. Also some wonderful trails to hike with unbelievable scenery. BUT the real attraction at Brainard Lake is the Moose!

I've seen as many as twelve very large bull moose at Brainard Lake in one day! The moose are usually very cooperative to pose for photo's too! We have tent camped all over colorado and this campground is by far the most beautiful place we have stayed. There are 8 walk-in sites that are full by 9am so come early.

It's pretty spectacular.One thing to note is that once you're above the tree line it's pretty rocky. We didn't really notice it as much on the way up as the way back. The funny thing is that we were upon the 'rock pile' but until we went around it we didn't realize that it really was. The last 800 feet in elevation gain is really scrambling up boulders. It's fun but it eats up a lot of time. It took us 6.5 hours round trip, granted we also took our time.The only reason why this hike doesn't get 5 stars is because after you scramble back down the rock pile, you basically spent the majority of the hike back walking through medium sized rocks that are randomly dispersed so it's really tough to be careful not to sprain an ankle or trip.

Nevertheless, that should not dissuade anyone from doing this hike. It's simply just a head's up that it's a bit more technical, therefore, a bit slower than a hike on a dirt trail.Overall, this was one of the best hikes I've done and I have many great photos to prove it!
